Cotton
From our studio
Every handloom has its own personality
Cotton is where most saree wardrobes begin, and handloom is where they get interesting. We love the small irregularities, those little signs of a loom and a weaver that machine cloth never has.
Each weave here wears differently. Our Kadwal cottons come in bold two-tone pairings like yellow with red, or green with purple. Maheshwari silk cotton sits light on the body and catches the light at its border. Chanderi is crisp and slightly sheer, lovely at a daytime puja, while Kota has that signature checked texture.
On a sticky Mumbai afternoon, nothing beats our linen sarees, which stay cool when everything else clings. If you prefer pattern to weave, our hand block prints in indigo, black and cream are the relaxed, artisanal side of cotton.
Most pieces come with matching or self blouse fabric, so you can stitch a blouse to your own fit. We'd keep it simple with a contrast blouse and oxidised silver, or go festive with gold zari and jhumkas.
Good to know
Which cotton saree stays coolest in summer?
Linen, Kota and soft cotton breathe best in the heat. Chanderi and Maheshwari silk cottons are a little dressier and still light enough for daytime.
Will my saree come with blouse fabric?
Most of these do, either matching or self fabric, and the product title says so. A few are sold as the saree alone.
How should I wash a handloom cotton?
Dry clean it for the first few washes, especially if it has a zari border. After that, a gentle cold hand wash suits most plain cottons.
