What to wear to a Delhi winter wedding as a guest

What to wear to a Delhi winter wedding as a guest

A Delhi wedding between November and February is beautiful and a little brutal. The pheras run past midnight on an open lawn, the heaters never quite reach your table, and the shawl you brought "just in case" ends up covering the outfit you planned for weeks. By the time the photographer comes round, all anyone can see is a borrowed pashmina.

It doesn't have to go that way. With a bit of planning, you can stay warm and still be seen. Here's how we'd dress for a winter wedding as a guest, from the fabric up.

Choose a saree with some body

Sheer chiffons and organzas are lovely in October. By December you want something that feels more substantial on a cold evening, and that holds its drape when you're bundled up.

Our Surprise sarees are a good place to start. The Fuchsia Black Surprise Saree is a black saree in a velvet-feel fabric. The inside of the pallu is dual-tone fuchsia satin, so a flash of pink shows every time you move or the pallu turns. It's a lovely detail for a wedding, because it looks quiet across the room and surprising up close.

And from the back: the fuchsia inside the pallu

The Red Black Surprise Saree works the same way, with red organza inside the pallu and black beaded lace on the shoulder. Both have a velvet feel and drape really well, and both look rich under warm wedding lights.

The rest of our winter collection sits in the same family of deep, rich colours, if you'd like to see more options.

Swap the shawl for a jacket

We'll be honest: we're not fans of the wedding shawl. It slips off your shoulder, hides your blouse, and ends up on the back of a chair while you shiver. A jacket stays put and becomes part of the outfit.

The Black Jacket with Fuchsia Surprise is the one we'd pack. It has fuchsia lining inside the cuffs and fuchsia piping all over. It closes with a single hook, so you can keep it closed for the drive and the wait for the baraat. At the reception, fold the cuffs back, wear it open, and it turns into evening wear. It even has a pocket for your phone, which means one less thing to hold while you eat.

If you prefer lace, the Black Velvet Jacket with Lace is soft velvet lined with cotton, with lace across the front and a single button. It's a little more classic and goes over almost any saree.

Add sleeves to the blouse

A sleeveless blouse at 1 am in Chhatarpur is a brave choice. A sleeved blouse is warmer and looks deliberate with a heavier saree, especially in winter.

The Regent Black Velvet Blouse has a boat neck edged in gold embroidered lace and sleeves that end just above the elbow. It goes with almost any dark saree and doubles as a lehenga top, so it's a piece you'll wear more than once this season.

For something simpler under a jacket, our stretchy long sleeve blouse in cotton spandex is easy to put on and machine washable. It fits sizes 30 to 38. See all our blouses with sleeves for more.

Pick deep colours for night functions

Winter weddings are mostly evening events, and rich colours look best under warm lights. Jewel tones also photograph beautifully against a decorated mandap. Our favourites for the reception:

  • The Royal Amethyst Purple Saree is a chiffon with a soft shine and amethyst beaded hanging lace at the corners of the pallu. Embroidered blouse fabric comes with it.
  • The Rich Emerald Green Satin Saree has handmade bronze-gold pendants at both ends of the pallu. It's 5.5 metres long and can be worn day or evening.
  • For more sparkle, our sequin sarees in deep maroon and deep blue metallic satin hold their own on a busy dance floor.

Day function or night function?

Many winter weddings have a day event too, like a haldi, a mehndi or a lunch. For those, you can go a little lighter and brighter, because you'll have the winter sun on your side. Save the deepest colours and the velvet-feel sarees for the evening, when the temperature drops and the lights come on.

A quick guest checklist

  1. A saree with some weight, or a jacket over a lighter one.
  2. A sleeved blouse for outdoor functions.
  3. Closed shoes that can handle a lawn. Stilettos and grass are not friends.
  4. A deep colour for the night, a brighter one for the day function.
  5. A small bag with a pocket's worth of essentials, so your hands are free.

Caring for winter pieces

Satin sarees like the emerald green are dry clean only, and you can steam them or use an iron on medium heat to refresh them between wears. Fold heavier sarees loosely when you store them, so the drape stays soft for the next wedding.

Getting it in time

Delhi NCR orders usually reach you in 1 to 2 days, so a last-minute invitation is not a crisis. Shipping is free above ₹2,000 and cash on delivery is available. If you'd like any saree stitched into our Less than a Minute pre-drape for ₹1,299, allow 7 working days for stitching before dispatch.

We hope it's a wedding you remember for the right reasons, and not for the cold.
