The Designer
Tanuja Sinha Roy is the Co-Founder and Principal Designer of Swtantra. Every saree in the collection passes through her hands — from the choice of weave and fibre to the weight of the fall and the way the pallu sits on the shoulder. Her design language is deliberately restrained: simplicity of line, strong character in the fabric, and nothing that distracts from the woman wearing it.
Three Decades in Textiles
Before Swtantra, Tanuja built a 30-year corporate career with Fortune 500 companies, leading textile sourcing across South Asia and Africa and managing sourcing worth more than ₹2,500 crore for international export markets. That experience gave her an unusually deep understanding of fabric, drape, quality and supply chains — and a clear view of what great quality actually costs when it is bought well.
Having raised two children, now grown, she chose to stop working for foreign companies and instead do something for India and its women. Swtantra is the result.
Why the Saree
Travelling across countries and continents, Tanuja noticed that women almost everywhere now dress alike — and that even in India, a trouser and shirt, or at best a salwar kameez, had become the default. The garment that most celebrates Indianness, and most celebrates Indian women, was slowly being set aside.
The saree, in her view, is the all-powerful, elegant and graceful attire: it suits every body type and every face, it reveals the right amount and covers the right amount, and it has draped everyone from Goddess Durga to Rani Lakshmi Bai. Swtantra exists to bring it back into everyday wardrobes — for liberated, confident, multitasking, self-aware women who believe in the freedom to wear what they like.
Design Philosophy
- Art meets science. Selecting elegance is an art; quality is a science. Swtantra was born to bring the two together in every piece.
- Made in India, by Indian weavers. Every product comes from weavers across the country — buying Indian, now for Indians across borders.
- Quiet design, strong fabric. Simple silhouettes that let the weave speak, with uncompromising attention to drape and finish.
- Outstanding value, always. Great quality and design at honest prices — which is why Swtantra does not run discounts or big sales.
“Tradition is still in our hearts. We like to feel desired, elegant and graceful, and to command respect with whatever we choose to wear. So let’s celebrate Indianness and be Swtantra.”
